Sri Lanka visa : the procedure
As of 25 May 2026, the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is free of charge for nationals of 40 countries, including France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, United Kingdom, USA, Germany and Austria. You still have to apply online for all tourist visas. This section will show you how.
Although the visa is free, travelers are still required to apply online. Here's how to do it:
1) Go to: http://eta.gov.lk/slvisa/ as soon as you have finalized your reservation.
2) The authorities will process your application and get back to you as soon as possible, with visa approval sent to you by email.
3) A 30-day visa is issued on approval and can be extended after arrival in Sri Lanka by applying through the Department of Immigration (extension fees apply)
4) Book your international flight at any time. We recommend that you use a travel agency to book your flights, so you'll have all the help you need if you need it.
For nationals of other countries, please visit the official immigration website. Visas are free for children under 12.
Your passport must be valid for 6 months after the date of arrival in Sri Lanka.
Please note that fees and procedures may change at any time, so please consult the official website for more information.
